VDRL/RPR Test for Syphilis

Overview:
The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) or RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) test is used to screen for syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. These tests detect antibodies produced by the body in response to the syphilis infection.

What it detects:
This test detects antibodies that the body produces in response to a syphilis infection. A positive result may indicate a current or past syphilis infection. However, it can also produce false positives, so further testing is often required for confirmation.

Who should get it:
Individuals with symptoms of syphilis (such as sores, rashes, or lesions), those who are at risk of STIs, or pregnant women (as syphilis can be transmitted to the baby) should consider this test. It is also used for routine screening in people with risk factors for syphilis.
