Pleural Fluid for LDH
Rs.600.00
SKU TEST-0117
Overview:
The Pleural Fluid for LDH test involves measuring the level of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) in the pleural fluid. LDH is an enzyme that is present in various tissues throughout the body and is released when cells are damaged. This test helps in evaluating the cause of pleural effusion (fluid buildup in the pleural space surrounding the lungs), as LDH levels are used to differentiate between types of effusions (exudative or transudative) and to help diagnose underlying conditions such as infections, malignancies, or heart and liver diseases.
What it detects:
The LDH test detects the concentration of Lactate Dehydrogenase in the pleural fluid. The results help differentiate between:
Exudative effusions (high LDH levels) caused by:
Infections (e.g., pneumonia, tuberculosis)
Malignancy (e.g., lung cancer, lymphoma)
Inflammatory conditions (e.g., rheumatoid pleuritis)
Transudative effusions (low LDH levels) which are commonly due to:
Heart failure
Liver disease (e.g., cirrhosis)
Kidney disease
The test helps in identifying the underlying cause of pleural effusion and in making clinical decisions regarding treatment.
Who should get it:
This test is recommended for individuals who:
Have pleural effusion (fluid buildup around the lungs) and present with symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or cough.
Are suspected of having an infection or malignancy in the pleura.
Have a medical history of conditions like heart failure, cirrhosis, or kidney disease that might lead to pleural effusions.
Sample required:
A sample of pleural fluid is required, typically obtained by thoracentesis. In this procedure, a needle is inserted between the ribs to remove the fluid for testing.
Fasting requirements:
Fasting is not required for this test.
Processing time:
Results are generally available within 24-48 hours.
