Pleural Fluid for D/R
Rs.2,000.00
SKU TEST-0116
Overview:
The Pleural Fluid for LDH test measures the level of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) in the pleural fluid, which is the fluid surrounding the lungs. LDH is an enzyme found in various body tissues and is released when cells are damaged. This test is primarily used to help differentiate between different types of pleural effusion (fluid accumulation around the lungs) and to understand whether the effusion is due to an infection, malignancy, or another condition.
What it detects:
The LDH level in pleural fluid is used to:
Differentiate between exudative and transudative pleural effusions.
High LDH levels suggest an exudative effusion, which could be caused by:
Infections (e.g., pneumonia, tuberculosis)
Malignancies (e.g., lung cancer, lymphoma)
Inflammatory conditions (e.g., rheumatoid pleuritis)
Low LDH levels suggest a transudative effusion, commonly caused by:
Heart failure
Liver disease (cirrhosis)
Kidney disease
The results help to determine the underlying cause of the pleural effusion and guide treatment decisions.
Who should get it:
This test is recommended for individuals with:
Pleural effusion (fluid buildup around the lungs), often associated with symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing.
Suspected infection, inflammation, or malignancy in the pleura.
Known conditions like heart failure, liver disease, or cancer, which may lead to pleural effusions.
Sample required:
A sample of pleural fluid is required. This is typically obtained through a procedure called thoracentesis, where a needle is inserted between the ribs into the pleural space to collect the fluid.
Fasting requirements:
Fasting is not required for this test.
Processing time:
Results are typically available within 24-48 hours.
