Pleural Fluid for AFB Culture and Sensitivity
Rs.3,000.00
SKU TEST-0115
Overview:
The Pleural Fluid for AFB Culture and Sensitivity test involves collecting a sample of pleural fluid (the fluid surrounding the lungs) to detect the presence of Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB), which are typically associated with tuberculosis (TB). The test also helps determine which antibiotics or anti-TB medications the bacteria are sensitive to, allowing for appropriate treatment.
What it detects:
This test detects the presence of Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB), most commonly Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis. It also includes sensitivity testing to determine which antibiotics or anti-TB drugs will be most effective in treating the infection. This test is crucial for diagnosing pleural tuberculosis or other infections affecting the pleura (the membrane surrounding the lungs).
Who should get it:
This test is recommended for individuals who:
- Have symptoms of pleural infection, such as persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.
- Have a known history of tuberculosis, or a history of exposure to individuals with TB.
- Have a pleural effusion (fluid buildup around the lungs), especially if TB or bacterial infection is suspected.
Sample required:
A sample of pleural fluid is required, which is typically obtained through a procedure called thoracentesis, where a needle is inserted into the pleural space (the area around the lungs) to collect fluid for analysis.
Fasting requirements:
Fasting is not required for this test.
Processing time:
Results available in 3 months.
