What it detects:
This test detects the presence of malarial parasites in the blood. It is typically done by examining a blood smear under a microscope or by using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs). The test identifies the specific type of Plasmodium species (such as Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium malariae, or Plasmodium ovale) causing the infection, which helps determine the best course of treatment.

Who should get it:
Individuals who have symptoms of malaria (fever, chills, sweating, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, and fatigue), especially those who have recently traveled to areas where malaria is endemic, should get this test. It is also useful for people who have a history of mosquito exposure in malaria-prone regions or those experiencing unexplained fever.

A blood sample is required for this test, typically collected via fingerstick or venipuncture.
