Overview:

What it detects:
The GCT detects elevated blood sugar levels after consuming a glucose solution. It is used primarily to screen for gestational diabetes, a condition where a pregnant woman has high blood sugar levels that can affect both her health and the baby's health.

Who should get it:
Pregnant women, especially those between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy, are typically screened for gestational diabetes using this test. Women with risk factors such as obesity, a family history of diabetes, or previous gestational diabetes may also be recommended to take the test.

Sample required:
A blood sample is required, typically taken after the patient consumes a glucose drink.

Fasting requirements:
Fasting is not required before the test.
