Cortisol

Overview:
The Cortisol test measures the level of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. Cortisol helps regulate metabolism, the immune response, and stress reactions. Abnormal levels of cortisol can indicate conditions like Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, or stress-related disorders.

What it detects:
It detects abnormal levels of cortisol in the blood, which may help diagnose disorders related to the adrenal glands or pituitary gland, or assess the body’s response to stress.

Who should get it:
Individuals with symptoms of hormone imbalances such as unexplained weight gain or loss, fatigue, high blood pressure, or abnormal skin changes may need this test. It’s also used for patients suspected of having adrenal or pituitary disorders.

Sample required:
A blood sample is required for this test. Saliva or urine samples may also be used in some cases.

Fasting requirements:
Fasting is not always required, but the test is usually done in the early morning when cortisol levels are highest. Your healthcare provider will provide specific instructions.
